These United States

Gigbot strives—hell, Gigbot promises to bring fans closer to their favorite music and, somewhere between the foot stompin’ beat and the free beer and BBQ, they did just that. Fans smooshed themselves into the Gigbot Garage last night for an acoustic encounter with These United States.

As the newest Gigbot employee—lucky intern-gone-hired—I’m required to attend such mentioned events (poor me!), among others, rather than remain the house frau I’m so comfortable with being. What a hard life, right? Working for two of the coolest cats in town, makin’ with the music and the good times ain’t such a bad way to spend 9-5.

Now, being the kinda gal that’d rather wait than be late, I was happy to have my punctuality rewarded with free Moe’s BBQ, a keg of Great Divide’s newest beer, Dunkel Weiss, and so many smiling musical faces. Early birds weren’t the only ones fluttering about: the band mingled freely as well. They always were such charming, handsome, and wandering minstrels…

Unfortunately for the latecomers, the food was gone in a delicious flash.
Fortunately for the latecomers, the show started late.

All good musicians take their time.

Taking stage on the foyer, fans crowded around in every direction they could: up the stairs, in the living room, in that other room (the Gigbot Garage is, admittedly, more of a house than a garage. Shhh.) on the floor in front of the band—seriously all over.

If you’re a fan of These United States, you know full well that their live performances are not only a staple to every music lover’s diet, but also one of the most knee slappin’, face meltin’, ass shakin’ good times you’re likely to have, well, anywhere. And! For those few patrons who were so deprived as to not know that, they were damn well made aware last night.

With jaunty drumbeats via feet and chair, smiles that couldn’t quit, and an honest to goodness funhaving that’s lost so often in bigger venues, These United States played loud through the laughter. The energy was undeniable. Playing a two-part, hour-or-so long set, the band ended the night with a request from Gigbot’s own Todd Roeth: the song When You’re Traveling at Speed of Light. We all enjoyed heebie jeebies of the best and most hilarious sort as, near the end of the song, Todd bounded on stage and, allowed guitar and further bounding privileges, brought the song to an enthusiastic end.

Todd lay on the floor in the lingering musical conclusion; feet in the air, he pulled a smile and threw it into the air, letting it bounce off the faces, feet, and door frame before seizing it back.

Ultimately, it was a fabulous show.
We ought to do this more often. :3
